Artist Statement
My work is about the essence of nature and the nature of reality. I try to reveal the internal, sometimes enigmatic, underpinnings of life.
For me, painting is a visual language. I find visual symbols and codes in biological sources, like plant forms and cellular structures. But I also see them in manufactured patterns, such as QR codes and Ben-Day dots in printing. When you combine them, they form a new visual language that is undecipherable, yet perhaps understandable on an intuitive level.
I often use botanical images. Many artists paint flowers, but I prefer to paint the roots or skeleton of a plant - the things you don't see that are essential for life.
The unlimited possibility of painting as a medium of expression is of great interest to me. Though abstract, my paintings incorporate formal painting strategies to create opposition and contrast. I gravitate toward muted tones then introduce bright colors. I also look to create contrast using logic/lyricism to push past the analytical and appeal to the viewer on an intuitive level.
The relationships I explore include dualities such as primal/sophisticated; subtlety/drama; conscious/subconscious; spiritual/sensual; solemnity/exuberance; wholeness/division; and poetic/prosaic.
